Q&A Gary Aspden

Gary
Meet Gary Aspden, for years, one of the main guys at adidas and now working as a consultant for the brand. Gary recently curated the Adidas ‘Spezial’ exhibition of which I was neither invited or received a book but nevertheless was (I’ve been told) a proper show with the likes of Ian Brown, DMC, Bobby Gillespie and ’man of the moment’ Tom ‘Dotcom’ Scott in attendance. Over the last 15 years, Gary’s been behind a lot of cracking stuff from adidas. He has instigated some of their better collaborations and brought Cashca designer Kazuki Kuraishi in to work with them in 2003 (back when Kazuki was with Bathing Ape). He is also a contributor to Showstudio, Arena Homme+ and believe it or not, did a few bits for the old Drooghi fanzine (and it doesn’t get much better than that does it?).Here’s what he had to say..

What’s did you have for breakfast?

Porridge oats (proper ones – not those nonsense ones that look like dust) with vanilla rice milk and two episodes of the Regular Show.

What’s good about your hometown?

Darwin in East Lancashire, It’s the witchcraft capital of the UK.

Provide us with the synopsis for your autobiography in 140 characters and what would it be called?

Autobiography? . . . No chance.

If you could punch any celebrity in the face and absolutely no repercussions who would it be?

Rolf Harris probably needs a daily birching but I wouldn’t want to punch anyone if I’m honest. It’s just not helpful is it? I despise the sight of Gary Barlow – he personifies everything I don’t like about the UK right now (especially when he wears those Monopoly boots). I’d rather I just never had to see or hear a lot of these people ever again.

You’ve got £300 to spend on one new item of menswear right now. Tell us what you’re gonna be buying?

I’d save it and put it towards something from Brunello Cucinelli.

Favourite 3 labels over the last 20 years?

Adidas, Levi’s and 6876 – of whom I have nothing but good memories from when I first came to London in the mid 90s. Remember that label Burro? in my mid 20s when I was first starting out in this game I did a brief internship with them. I made the mistake of mentioning in passing that I used to help out my pal who was a decorator so they tried to get me to paint their shop (unpaid) as part of my ‘work experience’. That was the last time we spoke. What a despicable bunch they were.

If a film was made of your life, tell us 4 songs that would definitely be included on the soundtrack including 1 for the closing credits?

‘Style of the Street’ – Broken Glass

‘Security’ – The Beat Club

‘Hey Mr Rain’ – The Velvet Underground

For the closing credits I’d have ‘Look Back in Anger’ – David Bowie, ‘F.E.A.R.’ by Ian Brown or something by New Order I guess.
